I always do that these days so whenever I use a Windows PC for the first time I do this:
echo @dir %* > %windir%\system32\ls.cmd
works a treat for me

The computers at my school actually do have ‘ls’ and other basics (cat, etc). I guess its cygwin (or something similar) but I was quite surprised when I was expecting ERROR but actually got a listing.
